Self is a work in progress

Be yourself; don’t let anybody change you….very often statements to this effect make the rounds on facebook. But this concept misses two very crucial realities: firstly that a self is always a work in progress because each individual changes continually, not only physically but psychologically, mentally, morally, ethically and spiritually and secondly that because man is a gregarious animal there is no way that we can avoid being changed by interactions with others. The point is that who we are is continually shaped and reshaped and thus we must take charge of that process to always ensure that the shaping is done in a manner that makes us always, the best we can be. And to be able to do so we must harness the tools of introspection, reflection and socially and morally conscious choice making. Failure to do so is what allows for others to shape who are in a very fundamental manner.
